Cardiff Rugby are thrilled to confirm Wales full-back Cam Winnett has signed a contract extension at the club
The 21-year-old penned a long-term contract at the beginning of the year but after continuing on his impressive upward trajectory, Winnett has increased that further
It is another key piece of retention from the Blue & Blacks, who have already announced new deals for Winnett’s fellow homegrown teammates Liam Belcher and Ben Thomas.
He said: “I am so happy to extend my contract here and cannot thank the club enough for the opportunities I have been given. I just want to repay Cardiff by performing on the pitch.
“I absolutely love playing at the Arms Park and really enjoy being part of a very good group of players, who are building and developing together.
“I just want to keep improving, and as a group to keep building on what we have been doing in the last two years, to make some big memories in a blue and black jersey.”
Winnett came through the Cardiff Rugby pathway, progressing from Treorchy mini and juniors to the Blue & Blacks age-grade sides.
He made his senior debut against Harlequins in 2021, scoring a try in the process, while the majority of the first team squad were in quarantine.
The full-back continued his development with Cardiff RFC and Wales Under-20s and broke into the first team in the 2023-24 season. He was virtually ever-present, making 17 appearances and impressing throughout.
That fine form saw him called into the Wales Six Nations squad and he has remained in the number 15 jersey since, earning acclaim with the Welsh Rugby Writers’ Young Player of the Year award.
Matt Sherratt has been delighted with Winnett’s progress through the ranks and believes he has a big future with the club.
He added: “While Cam only signed a long-term contract in the summer, his form and continued progression warrants a new deal and we are thrilled to extend his stay further.
“He is a top quality player and person, who has a great skill-set, is very professional and does not get fazed. He is also a homegrown lad that grew up supporting the club and progressed through the pathway here.
“He is now playing with a lot of the boys he came through with as well as some he used to look up to and I know how determined he is to bring success to the Arms Park. He has a big future here and in the game in general.”
