Teddy Williams was proud of the fight the team showed in their defeat to Lyon, but admitted he was ‘disappointed’ by elements of the performance, pinpointing a lack of discipline.

With Cardiff taking the lead in the early stages and then again early in the second half, he saw it as an opportunity missed to gain another famous win in Lyon.

The Blue and Blacks didn’t come away from France empty handed however, gaining a try bonus point, which Williams believes could be important as the pool stage progresses.

“I’m proud of the effort and commitment, but that’s probably a bit of a non-negotiable from where we’ve been,” said Williams.

“To be honest, I’m pretty disappointed with some aspects of the performance. We pretty strong and comfortable really and it was probably just discipline letting us down and from there struggling to get a foothold in the game.

“We were causing them problems when we were going through some phases and it was just probably that lack of discipline that didn’t give us enough opportunities really to attack them.

“I think we can definitely improve and it feels a little bit like one that maybe got away a little bit, but that point might be quite important come the latter stages of this competition.

Williams was named as captain for the trip away to Lyon and enjoyed the experience.

“I didn’t want to change too much from how I ordinarily play. It was a pretty cool experience for me.”

The second row was impressed by the performances of Cardiff’s young players, including 18-year-old Steff Emanuel who made his senior debut for the Club.

“A lot of the younger boys who had an opportunity went really well,” added Williams.

“I thought Steph was excellent, and Rhys Barratt was brought a lot of impact off the bench, so it’s good to see these boys getting opportunities.”
