Dai Young believes both Cardiff and Dragons have a responsibility to produce an entertaining derby affair when the teams meet at Rodney Parade on Friday (KO 7.35pm).
The Blue and Blacks head to Newport for their penultimate game of the season, looking to build on last week’s bonus point win over Zebre Parma at Cardiff Arms Park.
And with Young ready to face a motivated Dragons side, he knows his side will need to be at their best in order to claim a derby win.
“There are two teams who will want the result on the weekend, and we hope for is a good game of rugby,” explained the former Wales prop.
“That’s important and both teams have a responsibility to continue playing entertaining and exciting rugby.
“We want everyone to enjoy the game. The result is important for both camps but it’s just as important to make sure it’s a good game.
“We know that this is one of Dragons’ biggest games of the season and one they’re looking forward to.
“At the start of the year it’s one they look at where it sits in the calendar and it shouldn’t be less of a big game for us.
“We know that we’ll need to play to a real high level to get somewhere near our best and get this result.”
Owen Lane scored for a brace of tries as Cardiff claimed all five points in their final home game of the season against Zebre last Friday.
The hosts led by 35 points at the break, but were only able to add one try in the second half, courtesy of the influential Max Llewellyn.
And while Young was pleased to claim the win, following a disappointing run of results, he also insists his side need to continue to look for a full 80 minute performance.
The director of rugby added: “It’s important for us to build on the result last week. In the bigger picture, it doesn’t mean too much except for giving us a little bit of momentum, confidence and belief going into preseason.
“But at the end of the day, it’s a local derby, we’ve got two games left and we’ve got to keep building from last week.
“It’s an important game for us and it’s always better to go into any phase on the back of a couple of wins.
“We were very good in the first half and did the basics really well. We scored some good tries, looked really solid in defence and set piece-wise we were good.
“It was always going to be a little bit of a drop off in the second half, if you go in at 35-0. Obviously it’s not part of the plan but you’ve got to be a little bit realistic about it.
“In the second half we got a bit individual, and didn’t rely on the systems that had got us to 35-0.
“But at the end of the day it still wasn’t the 80 minute performance that we’re searching for but the result was really important to us.”
