Blues North under 16;s maintained their encouraging pre season form with a strong second half display to overcome a lively and well organized Blues South team.
At a showery Abercynon RFC a good crowd of around 300 spectators watched an attritional first half where both sets of forwards fought out a typical mid winter struggle with nobody coming clearly out on top resulting in a half time score of 0 – 0.
After the break and with a few changes in personnel by both sets of coach’s it became clear that the powerful north eight were beginning to get the upper hand, and it was no surprise when No 8 Will Griff John “Ystrad Rhondda” crashed over near the posts to open the scoring after 5 minutes of the second period, almost immediately the North were on the score sheet again when after a period of sustained pressure Sean Webber”Tylerstown” was on hand to finish off a promising team movement involving backs & forwards, Lewis Williams”Tonyrefail” this time converted to make the score 12 – 0.
Not to be out done the South came back with a superb flowing movement that saw winger Harry Robinson “Pentyrch” outpace the North defence to score in the corner, unfortunately the conversion attempt failed.
The North duly obliged with 3 further unanswered tries from Owain Rees “ Merthyr” Webber with his second and a final try by Tom Jones “Aberdare” Williams converting 2 out of 3 to bring the final score to North 31 South 5.
The North have a final preseason game with Truro College on the 20th of August at Treforest Campus ko 5-00pm before the First fixture in the Inter Regional competition against Llanelli Scarlet’s at the end of the Month.
