The sky is the limit – Mulder

Scrum-half Johan Mulder says the sky is the limit for Cardiff if they cut out errors while continuing to play their attacking brand of rugby.

The Blue and Blacks won a dramatic encounter against Munster last night at the Arms Park, scoring four tries in the process to claim a bonus point.

However, Mulder admitted that although they were delighted with the result, they need to minimise mistakes when they travel to South Africa for their final two matches of the league stage.

“We definitely made a couple of errors, and didn’t get our best game on the pitch, but getting the win is massive for us,” said Mulder.

“You get the win first and then you can worry about how it looks.  I think we still really gave it a go, and played like Cardiff want to play, but I think if we can actually just cut out those errors the sky’s the limit.

“We can really go to South Africa, get some points there, and then we’re in the mix for the rest of the season.

Mulder scored the decisive try in the game, his first for Cardiff, and had another disallowed.

“I saw them over-folding, the space opened up, and went for it. I was quite unhappy when my first try disallowed, but that was definitely a forward pass

“I knew it as he passed it to me, I knew this is forward, let’s hope they don’t check it again.”

Cardiff have claimed the maximum ten points from their last two games against Ospreys and Munster, which has moved them into 5th place in the BKT United Rugby Championship table.

Mulder admits it’s going to be tough in South Africa, but bonus point could be enough for the Blue and Blacks to reach the knockouts after the last two results.

“With getting that 10 points, we’re in a really good position.  It’s going to be tough down there, especially Bulls at altitude will be a tough game for us.

“It’s going to be a physical game. We know what’s coming from the Bulls.

“But I really think if  we can just build on those performances and put our game on the pitch, we can really give it a go there and maybe get a victory and even if we don’t get a victory come away with losing bonus points then we’re in the top eight.

“Winning this game was massive for our chances going forward in the season.”

The South African trip will allow Mulder to go back home, and see his friends, family, and hopefully some sun.

“It’s going to be good seeing the family, seeing some friends.

“We’re only a short while in Pretoria, but I’ll definitely catch up with some mates down there, go for coffee.

“And then we’re going to Cape Town. It’s also a lovely place and I’m quite excited to get some heat back in my body. It’s been a bit cold down here.”

The 25-year-old found game time hard to come by in the early part of the season, but he has become a regular in the side as his game has developed working with Cardiff’s coaches.

“At the beginning of the season, I didn’t play too much, but I’ve learned a whole lot about the game,” added Mulder.

“The coaches really helped me out, giving me understanding how to control the game, to make better decisions and I think it shows as my game has developed over the season.

“Where at the beginning of the season I maybe forced a few things, I now feel a bit more calm, feel the confidence from the team and from the coaches as well.

“It’s been really good getting on the pitch and feeling like they back me.”
