St Peters triumph in final Blues Cup match

22nd May 2013

St Peters RFC and Penarth RFC bring the curtain down on the Redrow Homes Blues Cup 2013 with a great encounter at Rumney RFC

Monday evening at Rumney RFC saw the final of the U14 Redrow Homes Blues Cup. Penarth who were making their first appearance in a Blues Cup final got off to a slow start as St Peters started well and on the front foot to score the game’s opening try in the early minutes.

But through some good defence and attacking flair Penarth soon settled in to their rhythm and the contest became far more evenly matched as both teams began to challenge each other through some excellent attacking phases of play.

Frustratingly this brought with it some handling error which saw St Peters increase their lead as Centre Ben Thomas coasted under the posts. A well-deserved try for Penarth just before half time kept the game close and it was still anyone’s game.

The second half started very much like the first with both teams looking to run the ball at every opportunity as the game swung from end to end through some great passages of play. With this style of rugby comes a cost and gaps began to appear in the defences of both sides but it was St Peters and the fine skills set of centre Ben Thomas that eventually gained the upper hand and broke down the spirited Penarth defence and ran in a number of unanswered tries.

However to their credit Penarth continued to try and play rugby and were rewarded with what was quite simply an exceptionally crafted try by centre Dafydd Smith. Deep in his own half he began a run that would see him beat a number of St Peters players with great pace and footwork. Once up to half way he began to open up and again beat would be defenders with ease as he finished off this remarkable effort with a try under the posts.

With a combined total of 10 tries during the game this proved to be a great advert for the game within the region and both teams should be applauded for the way they approached the final.
