Small margins the difference, says Sherratt

Post-match reaction| Head coach Matt Sherratt says there were small margins at play between his side turning today’s narrow defeat to Scarlets into a victory at the Arms Park.

The Blue and Blacks thought they had scored a late try through Gabe Hamer-Webb, but it was disallowed by the TMO when his foot scraped the touchline.

“Firstly, I think it’s important that we congratulate Scarlets,” said Sherratt. “We knew that they were going to be better than they were at home.

“We probably had the edge there in the contact area and around set piece. But I think especially in the first 20 minutes, they slowed a lot of our ball up and were pretty good in that area and I would say probably parity around the set piece. I think that had a big influence on the game.

“Then the game was just about who took chances and who didn’t. They scored a couple of tries really from snapshots and then we had a bit of sustained pressure and probably the last pass or a foot in touch or a lost breakdown was the difference.

“It stings, but it’s putting it into context as well. We’ll have to have a good look at the game and see where we can we can improve.

“They were down to 13, we made a line break and it’s a foot in touch and that’s the margins, isn’t it? If there’s no foot in touch and the ball goes between the posts it’s a very different dressing room and press conference.

“That’s where we can’t get too bogged down with scoreboards. I know that it’s very important but what’s more important is us just looking at the elements of our game and trying to improve week in week on week.”
