Robinson praises playmakers Anscombe and Evans

17th May 2018

Olly Robinson has praised Cardiff Blues' playmakers, after they masterminded Friday's dramatic Challenge Cup victory over Gloucester in Bilbao.

The back row, who replaced an injured Josh Navidi after only seven minutes at San Mames Stadium, was named Heineken Man of the Match in the final, also chipping in with an assist for Blaine Scully’s crucial try in the dying minutes.

Minutes after Scully’s score, Gareth Anscombe stepped up to kick the match-winning penalty with a stunning touchline effort in the 79th minutes.

Robinson, who follows in the footsteps of father, Andy, in clinching a European title, revealed how nervous he was as the Welsh international lined up to the tee.

“I wasn’t watching the final kick, I must admit, I had my eyes closed for that one. But Chicken [Gareth Anscombe] had nerves of steel for that one,” said Robinson.

“He was great throughout, but Jarrod Evans also had an awesome second half there. What a win.

“I’ve been here since the middle of September and the hallmark of this team is how we’ve dug in during every single game.

“Most games have gone down to the wire since I’ve been with this Cardiff team, and the togetherness of this team is outstanding, so I just want to thank all the boys for an outstanding effort.

“At half time we spoke about wanting to come back out and firing some shots.

"Gloucester had an awesome first half, they really came at us and carried hard. We knew we had to lower our tackle heights to deal with their big runners, and I think we managed to do that in the end.

“We didn’t die wondering and went out there and played good rugby during that second half. What a game!

“The togetherness of this team is outstanding, and is what rugby should be about. It’s 23 mates going out together and playing for each other, without forgetting the other boys cheering on in the stands.

“It’s great to be a part of this team.

"My father won the Heineken Cup exactly 20 years ago, and I’m sure he’ll make sure to remind me of that. He had an awesome career, and if I could achieve half of what he managed, I would be more than delighted.”
