The Glyn Derw PESS Development Centre held a Tag rugby festival for Year 3 & 4 pupils at Trelai Junior School recently as part of the PE and School Sport (PESS) initiative, and in association with Capital Rugby.
The festival was a great success thanks to the organization by Neil Cole (Trelai PE co-ordinator), with over 100 boys & girls from Cwrt-y-ala, Hywel Dda, Millbank & Trelai Junior schools taking part. Rugby skills and small game activities were led by the schools' class teachers and culminated in each school playing a game of tag rugby, refereed by rugby students from Glan Hafren College.
The festival was a result of a 6 week mentoring programme, which introduced a range of rugby skills to the children leading up to playing tag rugby, using activity cards produced for the teachers/schools by Gruff Rees Sport.Cardiff Development officer for Cardiff Blues.
Commenting on the festival Gruff said,
"The organisation of this festival was first class and both Neil and Mark Wysocki (Glynderw HS) deserve enormous credit for their co-ordination of the schools and the success of the rugby programme in the area. Certainly, it was clear from viewing the day that the children have really enjoyed taking part and have learnt a great deal, indeed, the local teachers have all made a real impact with their willingness to contribute in such a positive manner and by developing their own coaching skills."
