A Kristian Dacey try was not enough as Glasgow Warriors battled back to secure a scrappy Guinness PRO14 victory at Rodney Parade.
The hooker’s try early in the second half had given Cardiff Blues a deserved lead in Newport but the Scots fought back to claim just their second victory of the season.
A pair of penalties from Peter Horne had given them a slender lead before Huw Jones delivered a knockout blow with an interception try.
Cardiff Blues head into the next block of fixtures, whether their European campaign will kick off against Newcastle Falcons, with the festive derbies also on the horizon.
Cardiff Blues made a promising start with a solid driving lineout and trademark Jarrod Evans shimmy releasing Aled Summerhill. Rey Lee-Lo maintained momentum before Frank Murphy awarded a penalty, which Evans slotted for a 3-0 lead.
The Warriors came roaring back and surged into the Cardiff Blues 22 with an unrelenting, high tempo style. Cardiff held firm and earned a scrum penalty to clear their lines but the Scots kept coming.
Peter Horne hit the right upright on ten minutes but quickly made amends to level the scores.
The Scottish outfit enjoyed the lion’s share of territory and possession and continued to play with tempo but it was Cardiff Blues who appeared the more dangerous.
A delayed pass from Evans found Lane, hitting the same line from which he scored against Treviso. He attempted a long inside pass to Tomos Williams but the scrum-half was unable to hang on as the opportunity was lost.
The Blues continued to threaten and it appeared as though they had claimed a try in stunning fashion on 24 minutes after a thunderous hit and rip from Gwilym Bradley, who was making his first start.
Williams quickly broke and kicked through to the corner for Lane. The wing scorched down the right and collected in stunning fashion to race clear to the delight of the home bench.
It was a devastating finish from the Wales international but the TMO intervened and replies showed Bradley’s rip had trickled forward before collecting.
The young flanker was growing in prominence throughout the encounter with his physicality in the contact and prowess at the breakdown. He was unfortunate to be penalised on 35 minutes and it allowed Horne to boot the visitors into the lead.
Lane was also continuing to impress and he agonisingly lost a foot race against all the odds after a Matthew Morgan kick through as Glasgow held onto their 6-3 lead at the break.
However, just five minutes following the restart, Wales’ Capital Region hit back with red hot Lane once again in the thick of it.
A flick out the back from scrum-half Williams and quick hands from Ben Thomas gave the wing a sniff down the right. He skinned his opposite number before hacking ahead of the cover defence.
Possession was maintained and the ball was spread to Aled Summerhill who almost finished in the corner but showed great awareness to flick the ball back inside for Kristian Dacey to crash over.
Evans added the extras but Horne slotted a pair of penalties, either side of a yellow card to Bradley, to take the lead.
Cardiff Blues fought tooth and nail to regain the lead but as the game opened up and they frantically chased a winning score, Huw Jones picked off a devastating interception try.
However, the visitors managed to keep play in the hosts’ half for the closing stages, with Brandon Thomson close to extending the lead further, but his drop goal effort shaved the right hand post.
