Law continues as Cardiff RFC head coach following renewed alignment at CAP

Following the announcement of the Indigo Group Premiership Cup, Cardiff RFC are pleased to confirm Steve Law will continue as Head Coach with Gruff Rees overseeing the programme and renewed alignment with Cardiff Rugby.

Since taking the helm in 2017, Law has turned around the fortunes of the Blue and Blacks, guiding them to a first Welsh Cup title since 1997.

Cardiff had enjoyed a 13-game winning streak and were targeting a league and cup double before the Covid-19 pandemic brought the semi-professional game to a halt last season.

However with preparations continuing for a return of the Indigo Group Welsh Premiership rugby, Law has agreed a new contract with Rees taking on overall responsibility for the alignment in his role as Cardiff Rugby Academy Manager and Cardiff RFC Director of Coaching.

Law said: “It’s great to continue as head coach of Cardiff RFC and I am really excited about the future here.

“It has been a frustrating few months with no semi-professional rugby but we are all really looking forward to getting back out there and implementing our plans to fully align all of our teams.

“We will be fully integrated as the traditional Rags to Cardiff Rugby ensuring key game time for developing young talent and those on the fringe, while maintaining a core of top class semi-professionals.

“This will ensure we are successful both on the pitch but also in terms of providing a breeding ground for the best local talent.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Cardiff Arms Park so far and I’m enthused by the start of this exciting new era.”

Prior to joining Cardiff RFC, Law spent 16 years as Bedwas head coach, in which he established the Gwent club within the Premiership.

He will continue to head up the RFC in terms of coaching and will work closely with Rees to ensure the exposure and development of both players and coaches.

Rees said: “I am really excited to support this programme and work closely with existing RFC staff, especially Steve who has really driven a strong culture alongside some thrilling and successful rugby.

“By incorporating our professional academy members of staff, who fully understand the high performance standards and discipline required, we can help equip our players with all they need to push into the senior ranks.

“Ultimately, this alignment will benefit everyone involved with key messages and development opportunities but we will continue to put a team on the park that strives for success, makes supporters proud and a vibrant environment that all players will enjoy.”

The Premiership Cup will kick-off in September. All 12 Premiership sides have been divided into two pools of six - West and East - with the Blue and Blacks set for mouth-watering derby encounters over the coming weeks.
