Four Cardiff Blues youngsters picked for Wales Sevens

29th October 2018

Four Cardiff Blues youngsters have been named in Richie Pugh's Wales Sevens squad for the upcoming 2018/19 World Rugby Sevens Series.

Ben Jones, Dane Blacker, Corey Howells and Dafydd Smith will all link up with the national Sevens squad, as they prepare for the series opener in Dubai on December 1.

Former Cardiff Blues players, Owen Jenkins and Ben Roach, are amongst the eight core players in the squad, with Jay Jones and Cai Devine having represented the region at age-grade and A team levels respectively.

Many of the region's current first team players have represented Wales Sevens over the years, including Owen Lane, Jason Harries and scrum-half, Lloyd Williams, who played a part in the Rugby Sevens World Cup in San Francisco earlier this year.

Pugh says that having a 24-man squad will ensure there is a drive for competition as Wales compete on the world's premier rugby sevens circuit. "There's a fresh look to the squad and a lot of excitement for the series ahead," says Pugh.

"We've got over 20 players all pushing each other over three weeks, driving standards.

"Exposure to the sevens environment, where players' skills are tested under pressure on the world stage, is great for player development. Our aim is to help produce future regional and international players through the WRU pathway, and we're looking to build on the success we've already had in doing that."
