Chris Czekaj is enjoying life at Fullback so much that he is looking to make the switch a permanent one.
Utilising Czekaj at Fullback in the absence of Ben Blair has proven fruitful thus far. Czekaj was involved in two of the Blues’ four tries in the 34-23 win over Edinburgh, and the man who has been capped seven times by Wales as a winger has set his sights on establishing himself as a no.15.
“I’m really enjoying it. I had a few games there last season and I hadn’t really thought about playing there before but it’s going well. You get a lot more space and you have to be more aware of what’s going on around you. You get more of the ball too,” he said.
“I see myself more as a Fullback/Wing. I enjoy it at Fullback more than on the wing so that is where I want to go. My kicking game is one of my strengths that lends to the position. I have always been just a Winger and in that situation you’re either playing or you’re not so it’s good to give the coaches another option.”
Despite still learning the position, Czekaj is aiming to crank up the pressure on the man who currently occupies that position for the national team.
“It’s good from an international perspective to be comfortable in more than one position.”
“We are both strong runners and both left footed so there are similarities between myself and Lee Byrne.”
“Obviously when Lee was out in the autumn people were put there only as cover whereas I’m aiming to compete for his position.”
