Consistency is key says Goodfield

Duane Goodfield has called for consistency as Cardiff prepare to welcome Zebre Parma for the final home game of the United Rugby Championship season on Friday.

The Blue and Blacks look to return to winning ways after a disappointing April, but head into the encounter on the back of an improved performance against Munster last week.

Goodfield believes Cardiff have shown in patches what they are capable of during recent games, but insists they need to sustain their form over a longer period.

The assistant coach said: “We’ve had disappointing results, particularly in recent games, but last week in Munster was certainly a better display from us particularly in the first period. We showed more of what we can produce and that’s been the consistent message over the last month.

“We’ve definitely produced in the first quarters but have fallen away in the second half, which has been a focus for us this week.

“As a pack, over the season we’ve been pretty consistent but in the last couple of weeks, against Scarlets and Glasgow, we let ourselves down a little bit with our own line-out.

“But going up to Saracens and Munster we were really good so it’s about keeping the consistency there.

“It’s massively important to finish off at home with a win. Everyone knows that, from coaches to players.

“We’ve had good preparations this week going into it and there’s a clear focus this week.

“We know how much these games mean to the club and all the supporters.

“There will be no underestimating the opposition that we will be facing, particularly with their recent form where they beat Dragons.

“We won’t underestimate anything that they will bring. They’ve played against really good teams recently but they’ve also shown what they can do.

“The next few games is almost like a mini competition with the teams who are around us. But as I’ve mentioned previously, we’re only focusing on our performance this weekend.”

Goodfield, who began his coaching career with the club’s academy, has also backed youngsters to step up when called up – as we’ve recently seen in the case of Theo Cabango.

The former Cardiff front row added: “You look at Theo, who has done really well since he’s come in, while Teddy Williams has also had opportunities.

“So there’s certainly youngsters getting opportunities. Looking at the next three games, that’s still on the forefront of our minds is getting the right boys on the field who can go get the result and perform well.”
