Scrum-halfs
Gareth Cooper (2009-2011 | 22 appearances | 2 tries | 46 caps for Wales | 1 cap for British and Irish Lions)
Gareth Cooper joined Cardiff Blues from Gloucester in 2009, and was already an established international player who had featured for British and Irish Lions in New Zealand in 2005 and won Grand Slams in 2005 and 2008. Having featured in 20 games in his debut campaign, and scoring twice, Cooper was forced to leave the region early due to injury. He also featured for Cardiff RFC in the early days of his career, while on loan from Bath.
Mike Phillips (2005-2007 | 48 appearances | 8 tries | 94 caps for Wales | 5 caps for British and Irish Lions)
Mike Phillips grew to become one of Wales’ leading scrum halves, and enjoyed a two-year stint with Cardiff Blues, having joined from Scarlets in 2005. Phillips, who scored eight tries in 48 appearances, was first choice before departing for Ospreys in 2007. The physical scrum half would go on to become a decorated International scrum half, winning 99 Test caps over the course of his career.
Richie Rees (2007-2012 | 100 appearances | 5 tries | 9 caps for Wales)
Richie Rees’ form at the Arms Park earned him a call-up for Warren Gatland’s Wales squad, where he would go on to win nine caps. He also played a prominent role in both the EDF Cup and Amlin Cup final wins. Rees played a 100 games for the region, having arrived from London Irish in 2007, and he is currently backs and attack coach with Cardiff Blues.
Jason Spice (2007-2009 | 46 appearances | 6 tries)
Kiwi Jason Spice arrived at the Arms Park from Ospreys in 2007, having had previous experience in the All Blacks set-up. His try against Northampton secured the Blues’ spot in the EDF Cup Final, but he broke his arm in the clash against Gloucester. The former Hurricanes number nine was another New Zealand-born star who starred alongside the likes of Paul Tito and Xavier Rush.
Lloyd Williams (2010-present | 210 appearances | 33 tries | 28 caps for Wales)
Lloyd Williams is second on the Cardiff Blues all-time appearance makers list, having surpassed the 200 mark earlier this season, and is showing no signs of slowing down. One of the most technically gifted scrum halves with an eye for the line, loyal servant Williams has also crossed for an impressive 33 tries for his home region and also plays an important role off the field.
Tomos Williams (2013-present | 91 appearances | 14 tries | 20 caps for Wales)
Electric scrum half Tomos Williams is the type of player that puts you on the edge of your seat. He’s shown his game-changing ability since making his debut in 2013, and is edging ever-closer to a century of appearances. Williams has also made his mark on the international stage in recent months.
