Cardiff Blues turn attention from scrum-half to fly-half as we continue our search for the Ultimate XV!
Gareth Anscombe (2014-2019 | 77 appearances | 15 tries | 615 points | 27 caps for Wales)
Gareth Anscombe arrived in Cardiff from Chiefs, where he won the Super Rugby title. The former New Zealand under-20 international had his critics when touching down in Wales, but form for the region, followed by performances for Wales, silenced those doubters. Anscombe cemented his place in the region’s history by converting a last-gasp winning penalty to seal a second Challenge Cup for Cardiff Blues in 2018. He also established himself as number one choice for Wales, guiding them to a Grand Slam in 2019 before departing for Ospreys.
Jarrod Evans (2015-present | 75 appearances | 7 tries | 396 points | 6 caps for Wales)
Jinking Jarrod Evans is one of the most exciting outside halves to have played for the region. Having graduated from the academy, the promising outside half worked his way into the number 10 jersey with some stand-out performances which eventually earned him international honours. Evans, who still has bags of potential and a long career ahead of him, has had plenty of eye catching moments thanks to his ability of unlocking opposition defences. The outside half was named the region’s Discovery of the Year and Players’ Player of the Year in 2018/19.
Rhys Patchell (2011-2016 | 82 appearances | 15 tries | 615 points | 19 caps for Wales)
‘Patch’ was a firm favourite amongst Cardiff Blues supporters. Another graduate of the academy, the playmaker quickly found himself on the senior stage and enjoyed a rapid rise to become a key member of the backline. With a booming kick, highlighted by his monstrous 60 meter penalty against Glasgow in the Heineken Cup, Patchell was also a dangerous attacker, whether he was playing at outside half or full back. He is joint-third on the all-time top point scorers list, alongside Anscombe.
Nicky Robinson (2003-2009, 2016-2017 | 132 appearances | 22 tries | 670 points | 13 caps for Wales)
Nicky Robinson was the number 10 at Cardiff Blues for the first six years of the regional era. ‘The King’, as he became known on the Arms Park terraces, was a silky, elegant attacker, with a wide-rang of impressive passing skills. He steered Cardiff Blues to the EDF Energy Cup win in 2009 before joining Gloucester in 2009. Robinson returned to the region in 2016 for season as injury cover.
Ceri Sweeney (2008-2013 | 113 appearances | 13 tries | 331 points | 35 caps for Wales)
Ceri Sweeney joined Cardiff Blues in 2008 following stints with Dragons and Celtic Warriors. The 35-times capped international scored a try in the EDF Cup final win over Gloucester and played the full 80 minutes in the Amlin Cup final victory over Toulon. Sweeney went on to make 113 appearances in five season before departing for Exeter Chiefs in 2013.
