Blues to make late calls on key duo

2nd December 2014

Director of Rugby Mark Hammett has revealed he will give Gareth Anscombe and Sam Warburton as much time as possible to make the key European date with London Irish this Saturday at BT Sport Cardiff Arms Park (kick-off 3.15pm).

Cardiff Blues return to European Rugby Challenge Cup action this weekend as the top two teams in Pool 1 – and only sides with 100percent records in the competition – do battle in the Welsh capital.

Fly half Anscombe was taken off at half-time during the Guinness PRO12 clash with Treviso last Friday and is being monitored for a dead leg as he looks to make a quick recovery.

And Hammer has added that Wales skipper Warburton will also be assessed as the region looks to his involvement during a big month of European and league action.

“Gareth is 50/50 for the weekend,” he said. “We are going to give him until later in the week to get right. The medics are pretty confident but we will wait and see.

“I thought he was very good against Treviso, but I also thought Gareth Davies was very good in the second half. We have good competition from that perspective.

“Gareth led things well and when things didn’t go right it was more through combinations and that comes with players getting used to each other. We’re hopeful of some positive news and he has been registered for Europe.

“Our internationals have all come back in really good shape,” added Hammer. “Warby, though, suffered a couple of stingers against the South Africans which could yet rule him out.

“He was so positive when I spoke to him before the Test. I also spoke to him on Monday and from a mind-set and mental perspective he is fantastic and really revved up for this next month or so in what is a busy and big time for us.

“But we have got to make sure Warby is 100percent and right, so we might be better off holding him back from this one. We will make a call on him later in the week.”
