Blaenau Gwent v Cardiff DC Thomas Cup Report

5th December 2006

Ebbw Vale had very kindly offered their ground after a late pitch inspection found the original venue unplayable.

The Cardiff side started strongly and took an immediate strangle hold on the game. Early tries came from Callum McDonald (Trowbridge) and captain Matthew Marley (Creigiau). The teams turned around at half time with 30 unanswered points in Cardiff’s favour.

The commitment and skill of the Cardiff squad were superior in every facet. It was only the tenacious defence displayed by the opposition, that prevented Cardiff scoring more points.

Try of the game came when Jack Beere (St. Bernadettes) secured turn over ball and the Cardiff side won the ensuing ruck. Mathew Jones (Bryn Hafod) made the hard yards from a pick up, supported well by Ryan Farrah (St. Peters). The referee stopped play for an unsighted ball on the opposition 10 yard line. From the scrum, quick thinking and a sniping run from Michael Hale saw more Cardiff points.

A comprehensive victory sees Cardiff now progress to the quarter finals of the DC Thomas Cup.

Man of the match. Bradley Mais (Pentrebane). His charging runs into the heart of the opposition and his wonderful levels of skill on the ball created many of Cardiff’s try scoring opportunities.
