New signing Gareth Anscombe admits he is ready to 'get stuck in' as he prepares for his eagerly-awaited Cardiff Blues debut this weekend at Edinburgh in the Guinness PRO12.
Director of Rugby Mark Hammett confirmed on Wednesday that Anscombe will start the game at BT Murrayfield on Sunday afternoon at full back.
And talented former Waikato Chiefs man Anscombe is now on countdown for his big debut for the Blues after a whirlwind first few weeks in Wales.
“I’m settling in and I’ve managed to find a place to move into so I’ve enjoyed the last week or so and it will be nice to get stuck into the footie and do some training,” he said.
“I arrived last Sunday and it was a pretty crazy first week. I had a bit of a break after the ITM Cup with Auckland so I’m feeling pretty refreshed and I’m excited about the challenge ahead and ready to get stuck in.
“I’ve still got a lot of homework to do in all honesty. The boys here have been really helpful and I’ve had a few training sessions now. I’ve got to work hard and come Sunday night I should be raring to go.
“I tried to watch Blues before I came and keep updated. Obviously results have been up and down but we’ve had a couple of good results recently and I was there to watch the victory in the LV=Cup over Scarlets. Hopefully I can now contribute to the cause.”
Director of Rugby Hammett added: “Gareth has only been in camp a week and it’s important he doesn’t have to drive the ship straight up at fly half so we will start him at full back and get him involved.
“He’s showed superb form as a 10 or 15. No doubt he will want to be a 10 but, like always, the team needs come first. We are looking forward to seeing him in our jersey and playing.”
