New recruit Gareth Anscombe has vowed his focus is purely on performing for Cardiff Blues as he looks ahead to his potential big home debut this Friday night when Treviso arrive at BT Sport Cardiff Arms Park (kick-off 7.35pm).
Anscombe is settling into a new life in Wales and impressed on his debut at full back as Blues lost out to Edinburgh at BT Murrayfield last weekend.
The 23-year-old could now be set for his long-awaited debut in front of home fans as Italian side Treviso – fresh from a draw with champions Leinster – jet into the Welsh capital.
And while much has been made of his qualification for Wales through his mother, Anscombe has spoken passionately about producing for Blues and not being distracted by any other factors.
“I feel it’s a great opportunity here for me and I spoke to a lot of people back home that I trusted and respected before making the decision,” he said.
“It’s been well publicised that I can play for Wales, but first things first it’s all about playing well for Cardiff Blues and that is my only focus.
“I guess I’ve come over here earlier than I thought I might have to, but that is sport and about taking opportunities. I’m excited now to be in Cardiff now and looking forward to the challenge ahead of me.
“It’s a good set-up here at Cardiff Blues with sharp facilities; I’ve been impressed with everything so far,” he added.
“I’m adjusting to the way Blues want to play and the new competitions. I’ve got to make adjustments to my game to make sure I contribute.
“Hammer (Mark Hammett) is here making changes and we all saw what he did with the Hurricanes and changing the culture there. I’m sure we have got the right people here to make it all happen.”
