Cardiff Blues Supporters Club (CBSC) joined forces with Aberdare RFC to hold a Balloon Race fundraiser for Owen Williams on Sunday (November 9). The day coincided with a mini rugby tournament and 1,000 balloons were sold to raise money for Owen's fund.
The CBSC team spent three and a half hours on the morning inflating the blue and yellow balloons, chosen to represent Owen’s club and region, and were joined by Blues players Macauley Cook and Kristian Dacey, as well as Owen’s mum, brother and auntie for the release at 1pm, when the sky over Aberdare was filled with colour.
Sarah Hopkins, Chairperson of CBSC, said: “Owen’s strength has been an inspiration to us all and we came up with the idea of a Balloon Race, not only to raise money, but to create a very visual show of support from us to Owen.
“We were so pleased to be joined by Sian, Gavin and Riley the dog, and some of Owen’s other friends and family, as well as our friends from Aberdare RFC. It’s very much our intention to continue to work together for Owen in the future.”
Kath Yates from Aberdare RFC added: “We were delighted to host CBSC’s Balloon Race at our club, it was a lovely day and we look forward to working with the guys again in the future.”
More than £2,000 was raised for Owen and all expenses were kindly paid for by Thomas Simon Solicitors. CBSC would like to thank Thomas Simon, Aberdare RFC, Darren Griffiths, Ospreys Supporters’ Club and Macauley and Kris for their help with the event, and everyone who contributed by buying a balloon.
Next up for CBSC’s fundraising for Ows will be the sale of Blue Santa Hats for the Christmas games and CBSC hoodies, with more exciting plans to come in 2015. If you would like to get more involved please contact Sarah Hopkins on 07792 017784.
