Two-try Amos hails team effort following bonus point win

First Team News | 12th October 2020

Hallam Amos says the team effort was instrumental, after his two tries helped Cardiff Blues secure a bonus point win over Connacht.

The Wales international was joined on the scoreboard by Kristian Dacey, while the home side were also awarded a penalty try, as John Mulvihill’s side made it nine points from the opening two games.

The utility back three praised the work of his fellow backs, with the likes of Rey Lee-Lo and Josh Adams key in setting up his scores, and was proud to see his side’s defensive effort pick up where they left off.

“We were going into the last 10 minutes knowing we’d won. I thought the boys played really well and the forwards fronted up fantastically.

“And for me, to play outside boys like Rey and Willis is great. They’re some of the best players I’ve played with and they make my job on the wing so much easier.

“We showed some maturity. We kept them out for a long time, because we could’ve folded.

“I know they did score, but it took them 16 or 17 minutes which is a big chunk of the game.

“That gives us confidence that our defence is solid and the next try was critical, which luckily we got.

“From there we were comfortable and it was a good game to be a part of.

“Our defence is what we hang our hat on. It’s been good, but it was also good last season.

“We’ve carried that into this season, conceding only one try in two games and that’s fantastic.

“We’re always looking to improve but our defence is where we see our identity and hopefully we can carry that into future weeks.

“It’s a bit of a cliché, but we need to carry those 80 minute performances and for the most part we gave that tonight.

“We just need to keep that there and carry it forward. There are boys in the squad who are gaining experience all the time.

“But you get to a stage where you have to use that experience, put the performances in and get those results.

“The first two weeks have gone well, but there is a lot of the season left to go.

“They were two easy ones that I scored, and full credit goes to the boys inside me for doing all the work.

“But it’s nice and it’s one of those things where you keep working hard and that’s all you can do. Trust the process and the results will come."

A Dragons academy product, who featured 115 times for the Newport-based region, Amos was more than familiar with his surroundings at Rodney Parade.

“It’s strange and it’s strange to be here without the fans,” said the Wales international.

“This is where I grew up playing and is even more of a home ground for boys like me, Jason Tovey and Cory Hill than maybe some of the other boys.

“But it’s great and the pitch is looking stunning to be fair.

“We might be here for a couple of months and it’s a good place to be if we can put in performances like that.”
