Sherratt left with mixed feelings after slender loss

Head coach Matt Sherratt was left with mixed feelings after his side’s narrow loss to Glasgow in the BKT United Rugby Championship.

His team led 0-13 at half-time in difficult conditions in Scotland, but were reeled in by the home side in the second-half before succumbing to a 17-13 loss.

The result gave the Blue and Blacks yet another losing bonus point, and although Sherratt was disappointed to not secure the victory, he was pleased to come away with a point and the overall performance of his side.

“I said to the players in the changing room, we're the first team to come away to Glasgow and get a point,” said Sherratt.

“Leinster have been here, Stormers have been here, teams from the top of the table, so to come away to a very tough place and come away with something probably just epitomises and reflects what we've done this season.

“Obviously I’m a little bit disappointed, I think we got pushed into touch twice, five metres out, where we got a little bit individual. We were held up over the line twice, by good defence as well, so you have to credit Glasgow with that.

“It's probably one we could have nicked, but to come here and get a point, I thought it's a real credit to the players.

“I thought we looked pretty dangerous with the ball, probably in the wrong areas sometimes. We probably need to be a little bit more clinical in the 22, but I thought when the weather allowed and we moved the ball, we looked pretty dangerous but it's probably our defence I was most pleased with tonight.

“It's very easy to come away from home and think, let's just go and throw the ball around and see if we can get a full try at a bonus point. I think good teams come away from home and stay in the fight, and credit to the players and Gethin Jenkins.

“The work they did in the week was replicated on the pitch, I thought defensively it gave us a chance to last play the game to win the game. Overall, a little bit disappointed not to take a win but to take something from Glasgow away is a positive.

“There was probably two we left out there held up over the line as I said pushing in touch twice and you know with a good Glasgow team with a wind behind them they're going to get opportunities.

“We just got to keep learning from the little bits and pieces that stopped us getting the win.”

The Blue and Blacks are next in action on Saturday night against Munster at Thomond Park.

It will be another stern test for Cardiff versus a team sitting towards the top of the BKT United Rugby Championship table, but Sherratt is hoping for another ‘fighting’ display from his men.

“Munster is a tough place to go and another top half of the table team, but I said before this game to the players, I thought this was our first test, if I'm honest tonight,” admitted Sherratt.

“We've played a lot of home games, we've played in the Champions Cup away, which I'm not saying it's a free hit, but just a different mindset in those games.

“We've played bottom half of the table teams away from home, so to come to Glasgow, at the top of the table, and show the same kind of fighting and spirit that we have at home, I'm hoping to do that against Munster as well, because we're going to have to dust ourselves down, some sore bodies in the changing rooms, make sure we have another good weekend, and we get to Munster with exactly the same mindset.”
