Sheedy 'frustrated' to come away with nothing from Edinburgh trip

First Team News | 20th October 2024

Fly-half Callum Sheedy was frustrated Cardiff came away with nothing from their trip to Edinburgh.

The Blue and Blacks showed plenty of resolve and enterprise in the first half and went into the break in the lead, but the home side piled on the pressure in the second half and pulled away late in the game to deprive Cardiff of any points.

Sheedy was pleased with the side’s overall performance and how they imprinted their style on the game, but their inaccuracies and errors proved costly against a stacked Edinburgh team.

“The frustration is we come away with nothing,” said Sheedy.  “We were in that game for large periods, probably up until 60-65 minutes.

“It was just the big moments in the game that didn’t go our way. You look at the end of the first half where we have a strong driving maul, it gets turned over and then they've gone to the other end and we have a yellow card. There were big swings in the game, and it’s just quite frustrating.

“We’re definitely proud of the fight the boys showed but when they got their tail up in the last ten, the scoreline I feel flatters them a little bit, but we go again next week in a big game against Ulster.

“I think the first half we played well, we played in the right areas and felt like we probably should have come in half time, further up.

“I thought the boys fought outstandingly well today, just probably little inaccuracies when it mattered in the second half, we really need to get a foothold in the game again.

“We probably were slightly inaccurate and inevitably when you're on the wrong end of the discipline, I think we gave away double as many penalties in the end, it’s really hard to get a foot into the game.

“We’ve got to learn and I said in the huddle afterwards, the fight's brilliant but inevitably we can't accept just fighting, we've got to start turning these into wins. We'll learn, we'll come back better.

“For large parts of the game, we looked like a Cardiff team. Especially that first half, I feel like we put phases together and we were really testing the Edinburgh defence.

“Against Scarlets, it was more frustrating than we didn't get to print our game plan on them, but today we've done that for large parts.

“But a team like Edinburgh, they've got British Lions coming off the bench, and when they get momentum, especially in your 22, you're going to struggle. They've probably done that with their last two tries, just physically just battered us and we couldn't keep them out.

Reflecting on the opening rounds of matches in BKT United Rugby Championship, Sheedy doesn’t think Cardiff are far away from adding to their win column, with a big game next week against Ulster to finish off the opening block of games.

“You look at you look at the block so far and it's probably 10 minutes against Glasgow which cost us the game where we gave easy tries, Scarlets you know we should win that and today we're in the game.

“This league is relentless and I was surprised with how relentless it was and every game is a massive challenge and then next week is going to be our biggest one yet, also a great side, internationals from 1-15, so it'll be a massive challenge next week.”
