Robinson calls for improvements ahead of Welsh derby

29th September 2018

Olly Robinson has called on Cardiff Blues to maintain momentum as they build towards the first Guinness PRO14 Welsh derby of the season.

The Blues battled back from an 11-point deficit to snatch the spoils against Toyota Cheetahs on Friday night and secure back-to-back victories.

They face the Dragons next Saturday at Rodney Parade and the openside expects a full-blooded encounter.

He said: “Welsh derbies are great, I was lucky enough to play in a few last year and they always have a little extra edge to them.

“It’s important for us after two wins to build and improve going into next week.

“Momentum is massive in sport, it’s not given or handed to you, we have to put in performances that keep the momentum going and at the start we didn’t do that.

“We came through and credit to the boys who came on and added extra physicality and enabled that momentum.”

Robinson was frustrated with elements of the Blues’ performance but has also credited the hard work of the South African outfit.

And he insists the only thing that mattered was the result at Cardiff Arms Park.

He added: “There’s no easy games in this league, we had two great games against the Cheetahs last season, which went to the wire so there was no complacency from us.

“We’ve gone out there well aware that we needed to keep hold of the ball and things to work on but credit to the Cheetahs for the way they played.

“At times we made it difficult for ourselves, the Cheetahs came out and really contested every piece of possession and at times we gave the ball up too easily in their half but at the end of the day it’s four points and a better position than we’ve been in the first couple of weeks.

“We’re quite frustrated but we’ve created a lot of good stuff and it’s not just 15 guys, there’s 30 and we’re not just expected to run it in and the Cheetahs did well.

“Sometimes you’ve got to grind teams down and sometimes that can take 80 minutes not 40. Yes, there’s things we’re frustrated with but we can improve.”
