Front row forward Gary Powell was the latest member of the Cardiff Blues to turn his hand to coaching when the junior section of his adopted club Aberdare RFC invited him to the Ynys for an evening coaching session.
Speaking of the event David Clarke, the coach of Aberdare under 12s, and Secreatary of the mini and junior section said,
"It was an excellent evening and the boys thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Gary did very well coaching the Under 14s, 15s and 16s age groups and all the boys thought it was great. We had a bit of a game and Gary helped out with the forwards and gave some of the boys some pointers on their scrumaging and in the line out. We have a presentation night coming up at the beginning of May and Gary has kindly agreed to come up to hand out the awards to the players."
The junior section of Aberdare RFC have enjoyed a very successful season winning a majority of their 25 matches so far and have 9 players in the Cynnon valley district squad. The Under 11s won the Heart of Wales Cup last season and face Abercynon in this years final.
"Duane Goodfield was also up that night helping out with the backs and fair play to both the boys they were good as gold. Wed like to thank everyone at the Blues for their support in organising the visit." added Clarke.
The Adopt a Player Scheme has proven to be a great success with the clubs throughout the region with Martyn Williams already visiting Cilfynydd Juniors and Marc Stcherbina visiting Cardiff University. Tom James, Rhys Thomas, Ben Blair and Fao Filise will all be visiting their clubs over the next week.
Each club adopts a Cardiff Blues regional player and on request, players will be able to visit your club on two separate occasions throughout the season. Please contact Liz Challenor at least two weeks before an event via email [email protected], telephone 02920302016 or fax 02920302008 to book your player.
