Jenkins can't fault effort of Cardiff Blues A side

Gethin Jenkins says he can't fault the effort of his Cardiff Blues A side following a Celtic Cup defeat to Munster A in Cork on Friday.

The hosts crossed for two early scores but the visitors' hopes were raised as Josh Male replied with a finely-worked score of his own. However, Munster went ahead to secure a bonus point 28-7 win at Irish Independent Park.

The Blues have two home games remaining in the Celtic Cup campaign, but joint head coach, Jenkins, insists they must improve on their accuracy and decision making ahead of next week's clash against Connacht Eagles.

The former Wales international said: "It’s a disappointing result for us but we can’t fault the effort from some of the boys.

"It’s been a bit of a changed team compared to first two or three weeks of the tournament, and the boys who were involved against Ospreys did improve from last week’s game.

"There were some good individual performances but our accuarcy let us down in key moments, and the decision making under pressure wasn’t great.

"We were under pressure early on with a penalty count of eight to two so we had a few frustrations with that side of the game.

"We couldn’t get out of our half in the first 20 minutes but we managed to put a try together.

"We also had one in the corner which was disallowed, which would’ve made it 14-all, but the game started to get away from us from that point.

"They had some quality players in key positions and they managed to get some really good tries together in fairness."

Joining various members of Cardiff Blues' senior, academy and under-18 squads were the likes of Male, Rob Lewis, Aled Ward and Dylan Williams, who have linked up from clubs around the region.

Jenkins admits the inexperience within the squad has caused its challenges, but is grateful of the support shown from within the region.

"From speaking to their coaches, they’ve had a bit of trouble with getting teams together and putting what quality they can on the field," said the joint head coach.

"We’ve been lucky to be helped out by some clubs like Glamorgan Wanderers, Bedlinog and Cardiff Met.

"But the team we had on the field was young and inexperienced to this level, but for us coaches we’re pleased with the way they’ve come together and shown an appetite to go out there, play and enjoy the game.

"We have two weeks until we finish the campaign and it would be nice to pick up a win or two in that time.

"We’ll get back now, reassess where we are as a team and see what we can change for next week to try and get the result."
