Halaholo happy to get back to winning ways with Welsh derby win

First Team News | 10th January 2021

Willis Halaholo was pleased to mark his first start since returning to action with a crucial try as Cardiff Blues claimed the derby bragging rights against the Ospreys.

The centre grabbed the first of three tries as Cardiff Blues responded to last week’s disappointing Guinness PRO14 defeat to the Ospreys with an impressive Scarlets scalp.

That made it two from three in the Welsh derbies and Halaholo, who was back in the number 12 jersey following a minor knee operation, was happy to play his part.

He said: “We just wanted to focus on what we could do. It was a disappointing loss last week so it was about putting that right.

“It was a good performance and I was happy to score a try. All the hard work was done up front but Jarrod does what he does and I was lucky enough to get on the back of that pass.

“I tried to show some wheels and I saw Liam Williams to gun me down but I got there in the end and was happy to get there.”

Fly-half Evans, who was named the Guinness man-of-the-match, played an instrumental role in all three tries.

He soled a dummy to Jonathan Davies to slice through the Scarlets defence and put Halaholo away, bamboozled the Scarlets second-rows before Tomos Williams’ audacious offload gave Rey Lee-Lo a chance and his cross-kick laid the foundations for the third.

And Halaholo was delighted that Cardiff Blues rediscovered their attacking identity following a difficult week and had nothing but praise for Evans.

He added: “It’s such a satisfying feeling. We know what our identity is but we have gone away from that a bit. We have an exciting group of players and we went out there, expressed ourselves and it showed.

“Jarrod’s been doing that all season, the last few seasons actually, and it is easy for us outside him. All we want is one on one opportunities with ball in hand and he is able to attract defenders and get the ball to us in space to do what we can do.”
