Evans deserves Wales opportunity - Mulvihill

25th October 2018

John Mulvihill was delighted to see Jarrod Evans called into the Wales squad and believes the young fly-half more than deserved the opportunity.

Having trained with the national squad earlier in the week, Evans was officially called up on Tuesday, joining regional teammates Dillon Lewis, Ellis Jenkins, Tomos Williams and Gareth Anscombe in Warren Gatland’s autumn party.

It was just reward for 22-year-old Evans, who narrowly missed out on international selection last summer but has carried his impressive form into the new season.

He is now likely to feature in Wales’ opening Under Armour Series encounter against Scotland with former Cardiff Blues favourite Rhys Patchell continuing to recover from concussion.
Mulvihill said: "We're absolutely delighted with Jarrod, we're very proud he will take part in the match day 23 next week. He's a great young kid who works really hard and he deserves his spot and his chance at the highest level.

"He's got a bit of spark about him and he works really hard on his game whether that's on or off the field. He thinks about it a lot, he's a great talent and probably a little different from the other guys there.

“Jarrod is not the safe and conservative type, he is prepared to roll the dice, and that is probably what the Wales backline needs moving forward.

"Gareth Anscombe looks set to start at 10 so I'm hoping both those boys can contribute to a Welsh win next week against Scotland."

Following the Principality Stadium clash with Scotland, Wales welcome Australia, South Africa and Tonga to the capital.
