Cynon Valleys Turn It On In Final

21st April 2007

Cynon schools had sweet revenge on a very talented Swansea Valley side when they comprehensively won 15 – 0 in the Morgan Griffiths plate in Llandovery Saturday writes Dale McIntosh, Blues Development Officer.

Cynon had points on the board within 3 minutes of the game as Joeseff Griffin (Rhydywaun) slotted a penalty for a Swansea Valley player killing the ball.

Cynon Valley pressured Swansea Valleys line time and time again but Swanseas defence held out. Swansea just could not get out of Cynons 22 but when the Swansea centre realised enough was enough he put boot to ball resulting in Swanseas first possession in our half.

Swansea received a scrum and when attacking the blind a stray pass from Swansea Valley scrumhalf saw Joeseff Griffin intercept it and run 50 meters to score the first try of the game. Joeseff himself converted, which took the score to 10 – 0 at the break.

At this stage Swansea Valley were still in the game but realistically Cynons possession and territory meant we should have been out of sight. In the second half again Cynon were relentless, but as in the first half Swansea Valley tackled their hearts out. It was time to change tactics and instead of playing with width we started setting targets using the big forwards and especially David Barry ( St Johns ).

Davids destructive running meant we were always crossing the gain line and when we received quick ruck ball from another penetrative run a lovely slicing running line from Ben Jones (Blaengwawr) saw him score under the post.

This was a great team effort with the whole 22 adding to the result. This is due reward for everyone involved in this years U.15s.

The boys have been a credit to their schools, clubs and families and especially Cynon Valley as this is the first silverware Cynon has won in 25years. We must make certain it’s not another 25yrs before collecting silverware but for now we can sit back and be proud of this years efforts.
