Defence Coach Dale McIntosh has demanded Cardiff Blues 'come out fighting' and restore pride when they resume league action later this month.
Blues suffered a disappointing 15-10 defeat to Zebre in Italy and must now wait until Friday, March 21 when they face Ospreys in the RaboDirect PRO12 to bounce back.
McIntosh – who has taken charge of team affairs with Paul John following the departure of Phil Davies - was not pulling any punches after the loss in Parma and admitted a young Blues side had no choice but to ‘take it on the chin’.
However, he believes there is enough pride and ability in the Blues camp for them to still have a strong finish to the season.
“Things happen in life and you are left frustrated with certain calls and certain things don’t go your way. But you have got to drive through the fog and take it on the chin and move on,” he said.
“For me, these guys will learn from the experience and become better players and people.
“We now have a break before we go to Ospreys, a tough game away again. By that time we hope to have some injured players and senior players back. Therefore these youngsters will be put into a team with a better balance.
“We will live to fight another day. We will prepare for the Ospreys and hopefully we can challenge. They are a good side, I have a lot respect for them, but they are the focus.
“We are playing for pride and out of the running in the competitions,” he added. “But we are also trying to finish in the top six. I know that is a huge mountain to climb, but our backs are against the ropes and we have got to come out fighting.”
Blues return to league action at home on Saturday, March 29 when they face Ulster in the RaboDirect PRO12 at the Arms Park.
