Josh Turnbull insists Cardiff Blues are determined to fly out of the starting blocks in Saturday’s Guinness PRO14 encounter against Munster (KO 7.35pm).
Wales’ Capital Region head into the clash on the back of three consecutive defeats, and conceded a combined total of 31-points in the opening 20 minutes of the away fixtures against Glasgow Warriors and Ulster.
They battled back into the contest in both encounters, but left it too little, too late to complete the comebacks.
Turnbull says it’s vital they cut-out basic errors from their game if they are to pile pressure on the opposition and allow the backline to flourish.
The Welsh international said: “We’re expecting tough forwards and a physical battle, and you can always expect that from Munster.
“They’ve been going pretty well this season but I don’t think we need to worry too much about them. It’s about getting our own accounts in order.
“Especially after the last couple of weeks, where our results have been bad, we need to go out there and start well. The first 20 minutes is going to be huge for us.
“When you give teams a 17-0 start it’s not easy to come back from that.
“Last week, we showed some of the best of our attack and some of the worst of our attack, and gave them too many easy possessions.
“We let them off-the-hook too often with too many spilt balls deep in opposition half.
“We need to get that out of our game and put more pressure on the opposition. Once you start building that pressure, then that teams will start giving penalties away or we score tries.
“We’ve shown with our backline that we go that our intent is to attack. You’ve got boys like Jarrod and Rey but also Aled Summerhill, who’s really been on form this season and Matthew Morgan is another one.
“If we give these boys opportunities from quick balls, then they will cause teams problems.”
After suffering defeat in the opening three games of the 2018/19 season, Cardiff Blues bounced back at home against Munster to claim an emphatic bonus point win against the Irish province, with a memorable performance from Willis Halaholo.
Turnbull insists his side can draw inspiration from last season’s clash, as they look to give the home Arms Park crowd a performance and a result to match.
The utility forward added: “It was this time last year when we were in a similar situation. It came to the Munster home game and there’s a couple of clips from that game that we always go back to.
“It showed our identity during that game and we watched it again this week.
“We want to go out there and really put a good performance in.
“It’s in front of a good crowd in our second home game of the season and we’re expecting good numbers.
“We know it’s important to start well but we have to maintain that for 80 minutes now.”
