The Cardiff Blues are delighted to support the Vale of Glamorgans National Play Day which falls on Wednesday 1st August.
Vale resident and Blues forward Mark Lewis highlighted the need to be sensible on the roads saying, We are keen to lead by example; its important to drive responsibly and take the necessary care with safety at the forefront. Our rugby team acknowledges that local streets may be busier than usual with children playing over the summer holidays.
The campaign sets out to highlight our responsibility as drivers to slow down over the School Holidays, as children may be having fun playing in the streets, crossing roads to call for friends or popping out to their local shop.
2007 marks the twentieth anniversary of National Play Day, and therefore promises to be the biggest and best national event ever. Joanne Jones is the Play Development Officer at the Vale of Glamorgan Council and will present the Vales special celebration.
On the 1st August the play development team will be hosting a special event next to the Town Hall in Central Park, Barry. This will have links to play schemes running in Stratford Green and Bassett Park. Young people will enjoy a host of free activities, come rain or shine, and may indulge in Arts & Crafts and Den Building to name but a few ways of playing in the great outdoors.
Play Day is partly about ensuring young people, children and families have a great day out, but also aims to get serious messages across. For example, traffic and fear sometimes prevent children playing independently in their local streets and can place them in danger. If we all make a conscious effort to be aware of our environment and who is using it then gradually a difference can be made.
For this reason Joanne has been working in conjunction with Play Wales, The Cardiff Blues Rugby Team and The Vale of Glamorgan Councils Arts Development, Highways & Road Safety teams to highlight the important, Our Streets Too campaign.
