Head Coach Danny Wilson has spoken of the excitement in the Cardiff Blues camp ahead of the big kick-off this Sunday against Zebre Rugby as his new-look team aim to hit the floor running.
Cardiff Blues welcome Zebre Rugby to BT Sport Cardiff Arms Park on Sunday (kick-off 2.30pm).
Wilson’s men warmed up for the new campaign with a victory over Bristol Rugby and narrow defeat to Newport Gwent Dragons during a pre-season period that the new Head coach admits taught him a lot about his squad.
Cardiff Blues will be without a number of international stars for the opening months of the season as the Rugby World Cup takes place.
However, Wilson is excited to see how his young guns fire – and it all starts this weekend in the Welsh capital.
“Pre-season has been good on the whole and has given us chance, as new coaches, to look at the squad,” he said. “The conditioning of the players has been good and we are now getting right into the rugby.
“We are happy that we are at home first up and we look forward to that challenge on day one.
“We have our internationals away and we must deal with that; Zebre have got some away too so we are both in the same boat.
“As a team, we need to gel as quickly as we can to try and hit the floor running. The pre-season game with Dragons was only the second time I’ve seen us play and I can see where our strengths and our weaknesses are. There is plenty to do, but that is the challenge.
“We have a number of very good young players here at Cardiff Blues, mixed in with the likes of your Gethin Jenkins and Sam Warburtons when they are back from the Rugby World Cup.
“It all starts for us on Sunday and hopefully we’ll get a good crowd in and produce some good rugby for them to enjoy watching.”
