Director of Rugby Mark Hammett insists it is imperative his Cardiff Blues play with the right attitude and 'front up' when they face Newport Gwent Dragons in the Guinness PRO12 at BT Sport Cardiff Arms Park on Boxing Day (kick-off 2.05pm).
Cardiff Blues have won their last four fixtures at BT Sport Cardiff Arms Park and not lost at home to a fellow Welsh region since Ospreys visited in December 2013.
However, Hammett has warned the form book often goes out the window on derby day and instead the team with the most desire and attitude could claim the spoils.
“When you have derby games you have to be careful about looking at past form and strengths and weaknesses,” he said. “Derby games bring out a greater intensity and a competition which can be different.
“Often it’s the attitude that wins these games over technique and tactical nous. Obviously you still build that preparation into your week, but we know at the end of it we have got to front up attitude wise.
“I’ve always believed that you do what you need to do to prepare. You’ve got to front up and this game will be no different,” he added.
“The players have got Christmas Day off, and so they should, to spend it with family and loved ones.
“But, as we know, it’s a massive game and very close to being sold out. It’s critical that we perform at home in front of the supportive crowd.”
